Work-life balance is one of the most important aspects of a job according to employees. Employees who have a good work-life balance often have a higher morale at work, leading to higher levels of productivity. On the flip-side, employees who feel as if their work-life balance is non-existent can become resentful or disenchanted with work. The key to work-life balance is that it is, in fact, a balance.

As your employee scheduling software provider, we can provide a few tips to help you ensure your employees are taking full advantage of their work life as well as their personal life. Read on to learn more!

How to Encourage Work-Life Balance

Survey Your Employees

Survey your employees to find out what they need from you as a manager and how you can better allow them to have a work-life balance. Often, you won’t know how employees feel if you don’t ask them, so seek out their honest feedback and make changes to your management style if they feel they are being overworked.

Consider How You Make Schedules

Some employees prefer to work nights, whereas others might love to come in first thing in the morning. Almost nobody enjoys closing one night and opening the next day. While sometimes these things happen, try your best to keep employees’ schedules relatively consistent and ensure they have plenty of time to sleep and relax between shifts.

Being a conscientious scheduler is extra important over the weekends. While many hourly employees have “weekends” in the middle of the week, it is still a nice gesture to give them one Saturday-Sunday off a month so they can spend time with their children who are home from school or their friends who might have more “traditional” work schedules.

Encourage Employees to Use Their PTO

Paid time off is there for a reason, and employees should feel completely comfortable using it. Set a good precedent by approving all PTO requests unless it is impossible to do so. Employees shouldn’t feel the need to have a “good excuse” to use their time off, and letting them know that requests will be approved if possible can encourage them to use their earned time.

Limit Overtime

Some employees enjoy working overtime in order to take home a larger paycheck. While this is okay within reason, try to not let your employees work 60+ hours per week. Not only will this result in a better work/life balance for employees, but you will also save money on your overtime costs by hiring another employee to fill in the gaps. Our employee scheduling software helps you keep track of which employees are approaching overtime so you can fill the shift another way.

Lead By Example

When you show employees that you value your own personal time, they will feel confident valuing their own. Take vacations, leave on time, and tell employees you won’t be checking emails if you’re not at the office. This sets a good example and shows employees that you truly believe in them having a work-life balance.
